Eddies Secret Garden Exhibition now open

02/02/2015

We are pleased to announce that Eddie’s Gardening Group’s ‘Secret Garden’ Print Exhibition at The Michaelhouse Café in Cambridge, opens on Wednesday 4th February.

The Secret Garden is a collaboration between the National Trust’s Resident Artist Susie Turner and Eddie’s (formerly Cambridgeshire Mencap) Gardening Group.

This exhibition displays the works produced by the Gardening Group Members; Mary, Michael, and Joel at Susie’s Printmaking Workshops at Anglesey Abbey during the spring and summer of 2014.

Susie Turner works as a local artist-printmaker and educator based in Cambridgeshire.

During her residency at Hoe Fen woodland Wildlife Discovery area, a ‘wild space’ beyond the formal gardens of Anglesey Abbey, Susie was keen to share her skills and knowledge and support outdoor learning by providing creative ways of engaging people with nature. As well as supporting the development of artist’s ideas through print, Susie was keen to help promote participation in the arts as a preventative as well as a rehabilitative experience.

Students made traditional fine art prints, using a variety of techniques, often working from their own drawings and collected foliage. These workshops took place in Hoe Fen Woodland Wildlife area, close to the ‘secret garden’ regularly maintained by Eddies Gardening Group.

Eddie’s Gardening Group offers local people with learning disabilities the opportunity to take part in an activity they enjoy, in the open air, whilst making new friends.  Participants can try out new activities, learn useful skills and develop confidence and independence.

Working under supervision our gardening group is involved in useful conservation work in the gardens of Anglesey Abbey, a National Trust property near Cambridge. They help to clear and prune plants, construct insect and bird boxes and generally assist the Abbey’s gardening staff. The group also maintains gardens for a number of residents in Milton village, tackling a range of garden chores, including planting, pruning and lawn mowing. Members also use the greenhouse at our Milton site to plant and grow a range of fruits and vegetables – giving them the chance to care for their own plants and enjoy the ‘fruits’ of their labours.
