Young Volunteer Makes a Big Difference and ticks something off his Bucket List

Eddie’s Family Support Service have had the privilege of receiving a spectacular donation of £10,000 from Ricky Sykes, a 25 year old volunteer with the charity.

Ricky has been volunteering with Eddie’s Befriending Scheme since November 2014 and has loved every minute of it.  In the past 18 months Ricky has enjoyed playing golf, going to the cinema and eating out with his friend Daniel, a young man from Cambridge. Ricky said “My time with Daniel gives me a break from normal life. Daniel’s never ending quest to have fun is so refreshing and uplifting. Spending time with Daniel no longer feels like volunteering as I thoroughly enjoy it.”

Ricky previously spent a year travelling and he said it changed his outlook on life dramatically and made him want to volunteer to try and help make a difference. Ricky feels astounded by the difference just an afternoon a month can make to so many people’s lives. Ricky finds befriending really enjoyable and a welcome break from daily life, it is great fun and he has made a new friend in Daniel too. It has also meant that Daniel’s parents get a short break once a month.

Ricky had always wanted to make a large personal charitable donation if he ever had the opportunity to. It was something on his ‘Bucket List’ and Eddie’s have been thrilled that he has chosen to support the Family Support Service they provide. Everyone at Eddie’s is very grateful to Ricky. It is a donation that will make a very big difference to many Cambridgeshire families who have a child with a learning disability.

Ricky is confident that he has made the right choice to donate to Eddies. “Through my first-hand experience of Eddies I know they will cherish and use every penny carefully. A lot more enjoyment has been felt from the great feeling it has given me than anything I could have possibly spent the money on. I hope my donation can help encourage other young people to volunteer as I am sure they will find it as rewarding as I do.”
