Riverside Running for local Families

08/11/2017

15 runners will take on the sellout St Neots Half Marathon to support local learning disability charity Eddie’s

The 19th November 2017 will see 15 runners taking part in the St Neots Riverside Half Marathon to support local learning disability charity Eddie’s. 2017 see’s the first time for Eddie’s to have a presence at the well-established sellout race. Helen Thurley, Head of Community Services at Eddie’s said; “We are thrilled to have filled 15 places for the Half Marathon. Each of our runners have pledged to raise £150 to support our work. At Eddie’s we simply could not continue to provide outstanding services to so many local people without the kindness and generosity of our supporters.”

All the money raised by the competitors will go directly to fund the charities Family Support Service. This financial year we need to raise £29,000 to provide this outstanding service. Eddie’s Family Support Service can support a family with a child with a learning disability in a variety of different ways. For many families they may face emotional and physical exhaustion, financial hardship and social exclusion as a result of their caring role. The Eddie’s service helps by providing a fully trained volunteer for a few hours every fortnight to give the family a break. In this time parents might spend time with other siblings, catch up with a friend or do the weekly shopping. All whilst their son/daughter is having a great time with their volunteer. Deborah Nicholson, Family Support Co-ordinator said, “I receive lots of positive feedback from the families we are supporting, who for many this might be the only break they get from their caring responsibilities. I am incredibly grateful to all the runners taking on this challenge and for the difference every penny of their sponsorship will make.”

If you would like to find out more about Eddie’s either by donating, finding out about volunteering or if you feel you would benefit from receiving support from the family support service we would love to hear from you.
